==Early life and education==
Schultz was born to a Jewish family〔(New York Times: "New Economy; How Starbucks was put on the defensive by an attack on the Internet rumor mill that would not go away" By Sherri Day ) June 02, 2003〕 on July 19, 1953 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of ex-United States Army trooper and then truck driver Fred Schultz, and his wife Elaine.〔 Howard is constantly reminding his team, "We are not in the coffee business serving people; we are in the people business serving coffee."(Kellogg School of Management: "Howard Schultz and Starbucks Coffee Company" by Nancy F. Koehn ) November 28, 2011. Archived January 4, 2014.〕 With his younger sister, Ronnie, and brother, Michael, he grew up in the Canarsie Bayview Houses of the New York City Housing Authority. As Schultz's family was poor, he saw an escape in sports such as baseball, football, and basketball, as well as the Boys and Girls Club. He went to Canarsie High School, from which he graduated in 1971.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title= Howard Schultz )〕 In high school, Schultz excelled at sports and was awarded an athletic scholarship to Northern Michigan University〔 – the first person in his family to go to college.
